COMMUNITY NEWS On Sunday evening, August 27th, at 6:30pm, a worship service at the new Nooksack Middle School is planned. We may be inside or outside, depending on weather.

COUPLES BIBLE STUDY What Did You Expect?: Redeeming the Realities of Marriage is the title of the book that will be used in the upcoming book study for couples in their 20’s and 30’s. Join Don & Tres Kamphouse beginning Sunday evening, September 10th. Please use the sign-up sheet to indicate your interest in the program which will meet monthly.

DIRECTORY PHOTOS  Today after the morning worship service. They will begin around 10:30am and go until 1:30pm. There will be a make-up day in September for those that can’t make this session. We can use the picture from last time or you can provide us with a digital photo to include if these dates don’t work for you. Our photographers, Rashelle Cuperus & Trisha Card, will share a digital copy of the photo with you upon request. Becky Bos will be doing the layout and they will be printed in our 2018 church directory. Please see Shannon Bosman if you have any questions. Thank you!

PARENTING CORNER Jennifer Waddle has written an article entitled, “Ten Ways Entitlement Manifests Itself in Our Kids.”

  1. Laziness – a good work ethic is one of the most important things we can cultivate in them.
  2. Lofty expectations – Last year’s birthday party becomes old hat and we feel the need to “up the ante” every year.
  3. Self Centeredness – The “me, myself, and I” mentality has exploded in past years. There is something about the “I’m Third Principle” that encourages kids to put God first, others second, and self last.
  4. Inability to Empathize – unfortunately, entitlement prevents our kids from being aware of the hardships others may be going through.
  5. Greed – the inner sense of greed can get out of control in people of all ages, including our children.

Check out Jennifer Waddle’s article for the other 5 ways entitlement manifests itself in our kids. She includes some helpful scripture texts to consider in her decision.

PRAYER CORNER “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Ps. 51:10). When David was confronted with his sin – broken trust, failed leadership, and the death of two innocent people, he cried out to the Lord. But he had help. Nathan, the prophet, confronted David with what needed to be brought before the Lord. Has there been a Nathan in your life? Has there been someone who was willing to tell you the truth about yourself? Today, express thanks to the Lord for that person who steered you in the right direction – back to confession and God’s grace.

SENIORS Sept. 4th – at 1pm. It’s Labor Day and some of us would love to play games and eat some good old comfort food. We are having spaghetti here at church. Please bring salad or dessert items. After dinner we can play games until everyone wants to go home. Sign-up sheet on back table.

SUNDAY SCHOOL VOLUNTEER sign up forms are in mail boxes today. Sunday School begins on September 10 and many volunteers are needed. Please prayerfully consider your part in this ministry. If you have any questions please call Shelli DeJager at 966-2831.

SYMPATHY we express Christian sympathy to Tad & Shannon Bosman & family, Josh & Shauna Larson & family, and Phil & Patti Roorda & family, in the passing of Rich Larson, their grandfather/uncle.

THOMAS THE APOSTLE The apostle Thomas was also called Didymas (the twin). We are not told the identity of his twin. He was a fisherman by trade and a native of Galilee. It is believed that Thomas went to Babylon and established the first Christian Church there. He then went to Persia and then later to India. He may have traveled as far as China with the gospel. Sources believe he died for the faith and was buried in Mylapore, India.
