PRAYER FOCUS  Prayer is vital because it is the tangible way we live out our relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Prayer is imperative because God accomplishes his work on earth in response to the prayers of his people. The Spirit commanded early believers, “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful” (Col. 4:2). Consider these passages in your time of prayer this week: Mark 1:35, Mark 6:46, Luke 5:15-16, Luke 6:12, Luke 22:44, and John 17:1. Consider the features of Jesus’ prayer life in these verses. Was Jesus driven to prayer or drawn to it? To what extent did Jesus’ prayer life contribute to the success of his ministry?

SENIORS Monday, March 20th at 5:30pm – St. Patrick’s Day is almost upon us. The Lautenbach’s are once again planning their annual Crazy Dinner. You may be green with envy when you see what others have learned to eat with or you may choose to wear green so everyone can try to figure out what you’re up to. Sign-up sheet on back table. Fun starts at 5:30.

THE COMMANDMENTS The fifth commandment calls us to honor our parents. “Honor your father and mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you” (Deut. 5:16). The catechism (#104) claims, “through them God chooses to rule us.” The connection between honoring God and honoring parents is obvious. In order to honor our parents, we need to see them as more than people who love us or fail to love us. We need to see them as teachers. Lewis Smedes notes that children honored their parents throughout their lives. In childhood this meant primarily listening and obeying in order to learn. He stresses that honor is distinct from warm feelings of love that all of us crave.

·         To what extent have you viewed your parents and teachers?

·         What important things have you learned from them?

WORLD PERSPECTIVE Europe is the new “dark continent”. Africa now sends more missionaries to Europe than Europe sends to Africa. The health reports of the European church aren’t very encouraging. Church’s are closing and are being converted into mosques, museums, bars, and book depositories. In France, there are more practicing Muslims than baptized Catholics. In England, more than 70 percent have no intention of stepping into a church. But we must not forget that Christ is building his church. Every other religion in the world proclaims a message of acceptance, inclusion, and hope based on human works. But Christianity is different. Martin Luther wrote, “Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing; were not the right man on our side, the man of God’s own choosing: Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabaoth His name, from age to age the same, and he must win the battle.”  Christ is building his church – even today. The powers of darkness will be defeated. Jesus said, “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18)

PRAYING OUR DIRECTORY We continue our prayers for our church families this week. (Last names starting with W, X, Y and Z.)
