ABOUT THE MESSAGE We continue our study of Colossians this morning. Colossians, Philemon, Philippians and Ephesians were letters Paul wrote from prison. In Colossians 2 we discover some of the challenges believers faced. Three words will guide our thoughts this Lord’s Day: Walk, Watch, and Win. Be in prayer in preparation for our time together.

GOD WILL PROVIDE He led a life of thievery and spent time in jail. Although he trained for the Lutheran ministry, he was called a “degenerate” by some accounts. At the age of 20, he was invited to a friend’s home on Saturday where there was prayer, hymn singing and a printed sermon read. His heart was moved. God continued to work in his life and in 1829 he went to London to be trained as a missionary to the Jews. He met several individuals who were Plymouth Brethren. He became convinced of their teaching and he eventually pastored several chapels in England. On November 21, 1835, after reading a book by August Frankie, he resolved to start an orphanage in Bristol, England. The orphanage became operational in 5 months. He, George Muller, trusted God daily for the funds and food to sustain the orphanage. Each day was an adventure in faith. In this season of Thanksgiving, we look to God and thank him for his sustaining grace and the resources he provides. Look for opportunities to help others in need. Are the people in your neighborhood that need assistance? Are there kids at school who need assistance? Ask God to make it clear to you in any way you can help.

LUTHER’S SMALLER CATECHISM Martin Luther’s Smaller was compiled so that households could teach children the essentials of the Christian faith. Luther, in his commentary on the Apostle’s Creed, comments on the first article: Creation – “I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.” He asks, “What does this mean?” He answers, “I believe God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them. He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, animals, and all I have! He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life. He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil. All this He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me. For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. This is most certainly true. We give thanks for our bounty toward us. As you reflect on God’s provision for you, for what are you most thankful? Around the dinner table sometime this week, quiz your children about being thankful for the things God provides.

PRAYER CONCERNS Bill VanVleet, Sid Andringa, Sharon Westhoff, Bobbie Lively, Rolena Dooyema(surgery)

SUNDAY SCHOOL there will be a short meeting today following the service in Shelli’s office to decide on the offering for the Sunday School Christmas program.
