CONSISTORY NOTES Our monthly meeting was held on Tuesday evening, November 7th. The following actions were taken:

  • To celebrate communion on Sunday, December 3rd.
  • To call for our annual Congregational meeting on Thursday, December 7th.

Discussion: A preliminary budget for 2018 was distributed among the elders and deacons. We received a paper highlighting church safety.

COUPLES BIBLE STUDY meets today at 4 – 5:30. Next and final meeting will be Dec. 10th same time.

FOR THOUGHT AND REFLECTION Did Jesus only appear in the Bible at his birth? Good question. We must say that Jesus “did” appear before his first cries in Bethlehem through mysterious appearances called “Theophanies.” Theophanies are different from visions. After Jacob wrestled under the stars, he said, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” (Genesis 32:30) It is accepted that the second person of the Trinity was Jacob’s opponent. He also appeared to Joshua (Joshua 5:13-15) and to the three men who were thrown into the fiery furnace in Daniel 3:25. In the theophanies God took human form only temporarily and for a limited purpose. However, when Christ was born, he assumed our humanity while still being divine.

JR HIGH YOUTH GROUP Grades 6-8 meet Wednesday, 15th at 7pm for our Annual Food Drive around the church neighborhoods. Dress warm. Bring a wagon if you have one.

MEN’S GROUP STUDY IS Tuesday evening, Nov. 14 at 7pm. Please read part 4, “Healing the Wound” in preparation for our time together. Chapter 6 and 7 make up session 4 for Tuesday night discussion.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD It’s not too late to fill shoeboxes for children in need! Pamphlets are on the back table. Fill them with daily items, school supplies & toys. The Word of God will be added at Samaritan’s Purse Distribution Center. Return boxes near the church mailboxes by Nov. 15th at 7:30pm. See Andrea VR with questions.

PRAYER CONCERNS Bill VanVliet(surgery on Friday)

PRAYER FOCUS In the island country of Cuba, God has been declared dead. However, tell this to the many who have discovered Jesus Christ. Despite pressure from the authorities there is a revival underway. Prayer Points:
  • Pray for more Bibles and other resources for Cuban believers.
  • Pray for church leaders who are committed to kingdom ministry.
  • Pray for gathering places where believers can meet and grow.
  • Pray for the government as great political changes are happening.

SENIORS Tuesday, Nov. 14th at 6pm – This time we are off to Syros to enjoy some great Italian and Greek food. Come hungry for they always give plenty. Good food and great company go hand in hand. Sign-up sheet on the back table.

SERMON SERIES Colossians joins Philippians as one of Paul’s prison epistles. He writes to refute Colossian heresy. False teachers had infiltrated the church and were introducing teaching that challenged the initial gospel message they had received. In this letter Paul touches on “angel worship” (2:18), “secret knowledge” (2:18), and ceremonialism (2:11; 3:11) in his address. Is the message of the letter relevant for today? Do today’s believers need to hear the same words from Paul? Join us on Sunday morning. Pray for the Holy Spirit to open minds and hearts.

SYMPATHY We express Christian sympathy to Theo & Cheryl VanBerkum and family in the passing of Theo’s brother, John VanBerkum. Funeral services were on Saturday.

THANK YOU so much for your thoughts, prayers, cards and gifts of food and flowers during my recent surgery and illness. Everything was greatly appreciated.  Love, Gertie

THANKSGIVING is almost here. We will once again be supporting our local food bank and the Lighthouse Mission. Food items will be received at the church anytime.

VETERAN’S DAY is observed on November 11th. It honors military veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with other special days including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the armistice with Germany went into effect. The Unites States previously observed Armistice Day. However it was renamed Veteran’s Day in 1954.
